Frequently Asked Questions

What university degrees and life experiences best prepare students for a career in PR?
While public relations courses are helpful, we find that journalism and communications courses offer an understanding about the news business and strengthen both written and verbal communications skills. Experience working in a team-oriented environment, interfacing professionally with the general public and having a wide range of personal interests also develops skills and attributes that prove helpful if you choose to work in public relations.
Does the firm offer internships?
Yes, we offer a limited number of internships each year at our West Palm Beach office. Please prepare a resume that lists your previous internships, your scholastic achievements and your community involvement. A cover letter stating why you want to pursue a career in public relations should accompany the resume.
Where do you look for new people?
We find candidates through employee referrals; local colleges and universities; local media outlets; the local chapters of PR trade associations such as PRSA; and occasionally through online employment advertising.
What qualifications and characteristics do you look for when interviewing candidates?
We only hire people we feel fit comfortably into our culture. We want to add synergistic new components to our team, so everyone who works here needs to feel at home in the office from all perspectives. This is a friendly, non-competitive environment, and winning candidates are typically articulate, have excellent writing and organizational skills, an obvious intellectual curiosity, and comport themselves professionally. Senior-level job openings will require prior agency or in-house leadership experience.
What are the advantages of working in an agency instead of in the PR department of a corporation or organization?
The agency environment will offer you a delightful diversity of assignments, and you will become an "expert" in a number of industries. Experience on the client side also contributes to building an impressive resume, but candidates who prefer more variety in their work often choose to hang their hat at agencies.
What is the typical career path of a new employee?
There is no 'typical' path, since advancement is based upon personal motivation and the demonstration of professional competence. Employees will normally advance in job title and salary here at a much faster pace than if they worked in a large organization. As levels of responsibility increase, so does salary. This firm is known throughout Florida's PR industry for offering generous salaries, but also for demanding a high level of dedication, performance and professionalism from staff members.
How is performance measured?
Once a year, employees are given feedback in an annual review from their supervisor(s), and encouraged to discuss development needs and career goals. We also have a unique, peer-to-peer bonus system where colleagues, not company principals, recognize superior performance of their peers' efforts through cash bonuses.
